Luxury Black and White Portraits of Those You Love

Family, good friends and an evening of celebration.

We were asked to make portraits last week at a 70th birthday party hosted at Heritage Park in Calgary. It was a gathering of family, business colleagues and friends. It was an intimate gathering but oh so special as people celebrated friendship, years in business and only the love a family has for one another. It was a pleasure to meet the grandkids of the couple celebrating and photograph their immediate family. As well, we photographed business colleagues and their spouses and couples who have been married for 30, 40, 50 & even 60 years. When we first designed our Calgary black and white photo booth, we imagined photographing newly married couples and their friends. We never imagined who special it would be to photograph couples of all ages and how much they would appreciate a timeless & classic black and white portrait to frame and hang in their homes.

And finally, I just have to gush over this lovely couple. When I shook their hand I asked how long they’ve known each other for, the man replied “We have been married for 60 glorious years”. Sixty years! Can we all just take a moment and appreciate how incredibly special this is? I can only imagine what it would feel like to reach the milestone of sixty years of marriage. This couple is nothing but inspiring and I can only hop there will be a day that I can say I spent sixty years with my sweetheart, my best friend and lifelong companion.

For this portrait I asked the man what he thought when he first saw his darling sweetheart those many years ago. He replied, without thought, simply “WOW”. This portrait, captured just a moment after his exclamation is one of my favourite in all the years I have been photographing people. This my friends, is what life is all about.

We are quickly realizing that gatherings of all kinds deserve a visual record of who was in attendance. And I’m not just talking blurry iphone photos. A beautiful portrait is a timeless gift and there’s no better time than when family, friends and couples are gathered in celebration.
